Folders are a good way to keep track of all your files and be organized.
To create a New Folder:
1st: Go to the folder where you wish to create a new folder in.
2nd: Go up to "File" and select "New" then "Folder" or you can just right click anywhere on an open area of the folder or on your desktop and select "New" then "Folder."
3rd: When the new folder is created it is highlighted so you can name it something more relevant. If you forget to rename it you can always go back later on and right click on the folder and select "Rename."
4th: You can now save or copy files into the new folder you just created and named.
Cut, copy, and paste are all ways to move your files from one location to another location. The "cut" command will actually move the file from its current location to the new location you specify. The "copy" command however will leave the original file or text in its current location while creating a duplicate copy to the new location you specify. The "paste" command is what actually transfers the file to the new location. These commands can also be done with just about any text as well using the same commands.
To use cut, copy, and paste:
1st: Go to the folder where the file is you wish to cut or copy is located.
2nd: Highlight the file or files you wish to cut or copy with the mouse cursor and either go up to "Edit" and select "Cut" or "Copy" depending on which command you would rather use. A second quicker way to use this feature is by keyboard shortcuts. The keyboard shortcut for "Cut" is pressing Ctrl and X simultaneously while "Copy" is pressing Ctrl and C simultaneously.
3rd: Go to the folder where you wish to move the file to.
4th: Go up to "Edit" and select "Paste" or hit the keyboard shortcut which is pressing Ctrl and V simultaneously.
5th: Your file should now be moved to the new folder.
The copy and paste commands from above are very helpful when backing up data. Remember not long ago when you would copy and paste documents to a floppy disk? You can do the same thing now, only with a flash drive.
To backup files to your flash drive:
1st: Go to the folder where the file you wish to backup is located. For example, "My Documents."
2nd: Highlight the file or files you wish to copy with the mouse cursor and either go up to "Edit" and select "Copy" or hit the keyboard shortcut which is Ctrl and C simultaneously.
3rd: Go to "My Computer" and double click on your flash which is usually labeled "Removable Disk."
4th: Go up to "Edit" and select "Paste" or hit the keyboard shortcut which is pressing Ctrl and V simultaneously.
5th: Your file should now be in the original folder you copied it from and the new location on your flash drive.
Disk Cleanup helps you free up space on your hard drive by deleting temporary Internet files, downloaded program files, the Recycle Bin, Windows temporary files, and compress old files. Disk Defragmenter rearranges the disk contents so that every file is stored in one place thus increasing system performance. This is needed because over time files become fragmented all over the disk consequently creating longer access times. Telecom recommends you run a Disk Cleanup followed by a Disk Defragment on a monthly basis to keep your computer running optimally.
To run a Disk Cleanup:
1st: Go to Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup. Disk Cleanup will then calculate how space it can free on (C:).
2nd: Click the check boxes you wish to cleanup. I would recommend all be checked.
3rd: Click OK and then click Yes on the popup to confirm this action.
4th: Disk Cleanup will now delete all the files and folders you selected.
To run a Disk Defragmenter:
1st: Go to Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.
2nd: Click Analyze to determine whether the drive needs to Defragmented.
3rd: If it tells you that "You should defragment this volume" then click Defragment, otherwise click Close and exit Disk Defragmenter.
4th: If you did choose to Defragment, the drive will start to defragment which can take over an hour. You should not have any other programs open while Disk Defragmenter is running. It's best to just let it defragment the drive while you're away from the computer.
If you receive an error such as a "Non-System disk or disk error" on startup don't panic.
1st: Check to make sure there isn't a floppy disk or flash drive in the computer.
2nd: Restart the computer. If the computer boots into Windows fine, the error happened because it was trying to boot off of the floppy disk or flash drive first. Although, if you still receive the same error or an error stating a file is corrupt, please contact Telecom.
If you computer locks up while in the middle of a program, it could just be that the program stopped responding.
1st: Press Ctrl + Alt + Del simultaneously and select Task Manager. Windows Task Manager comes up and shows you what applications are running.
2nd: If your application that is locked up shows a status of "Not Responding", highlight the application and click the "End Task" button. Then wait a few moments for the application to close.
3rd: Close Windows Task Manager and restart the computer. It's usually best to restart after a program stops responding to clear the memory. After your computer boots up completely try running the application again.
4th: If your computer is locked up to the point where the mouse is frozen, hold the power button on the tower for over 5 seconds and it will shut the computer down. Though this is not the correct way to shut down your computer, it's the only way to try starting your computer again. If your computer locks up frequently it could be due to unstable or corrupt system files or defective hardware.
If you think your computer has a virus or you receive a notification from Symantec saying a virus was found, it's best to run Symantec AntiVirus. Telecom recommends that you run Symantec AntiVirus each month to check for risks.
1st: Go to Start, then All Programs, then Symantec Client Security, and then click Symantec AntiVirus. Make sure your virus definitions are up-to-date by looking in the bottom right under Virus Definition Version. The date should be within a week of the actual date. If it isn't, run LiveUpdate by simply clicking the "LiveUpdate..." button while connected to the Internet, then click Next to look for new updates, and finally click Finish once they have been downloaded to install them.
2nd: Clicking the + next to Histories and clicking Risk Histories will show you any previous viruses or spyware. Clicking the + next to View and clicking Quarantine will show you any files that are in Quarantine. Any files in Quarantine can all be deleted.
3rd: To scan for viruses click the + next to Scan and click Full Scan. Then hit the "Scan" button in the bottom right.
4th: Symantec will now scan your entire computer for viruses and spyware and either delete or quarantine infected files. Once it says "Complete" the scanning process is done. If nothing is found, your computer is risk free. If it finds a virus however, and quarantines it, go into your Quarantine section under View and delete the infected files.
If you think your computer has spyware or adware on it or receive unwanted popups or notifications, it's a good idea to run some AntiSpyware software. There are many different AntiSpyware products on the market though Telecom recommends using SuperAntiSpyware. Telecom recommends running AntiSpyware software on a monthly basis to keep your computer free of unwanted spyware.
1st: Go to SuperAntiSpyware and download the Free Version which should take only a few moments to download.
2nd: Run the setup file once it finishes downloading and click Next throughout the install process and hit Finish at the end. When it asks you if you want to check for the latest rules and definition updates now, click Yes.
3rd: Once it downloads and installs the updates, the "SuperAntivirus Setup Wizard" appears where you should click Next throughout the setup process and then Finish. It then prompts you to see if you'd like it to protect your Home Page for Internet Explorer. It is recommended that you click "Protect Home Page."
4th: Now that the setup process is complete the program will open and you should click "Scan your Computer...", then choose "Perform Complete Scan", and lastly hit Next to scan for spyware and adware.
5th: When the scan is complete a "SuperAntiSpyware Scan Summary" will show you how many harmful items were found and you hit "OK" then hit Next and it will quarantine and remove the selected items.
6th: Click "Yes" when it asks if you would like to reboot to complete the removal of harmful software detected. Once restarted, your computer should be free of harmful spyware.
