STUDIO/REMOTE PROGRAMS

Chicopee Schools Telecommunications Department

REMOTE PRODUCTION POLICY

PHILOSOPHY

Students who enroll in the “Television Production” course offered by Telecommunications Department are afforded a unique educational opportunity which is unequalled even by local colleges.  The skills and abilities to function effectively during a live production are vital to video work, and can only be learned well by practical application.  Consequently, students in these courses are expected to meet certain criteria in the form of serving as crew members for programs which originate from the departments Remote Production Van and are cablecast on Chicopee Cable Channel 5.  These events take place after school hours, or on weekends.  Remote productions are, in essence, homework assignments.  The time required is normally no more than 10 hours per term; however the effort is no less important than an athlete attending mandatory practices.  As noted below, remote productions are graded assignments and carry a fair amount of graded weight in the department.  Students and parents alike should become familiar with these policies to ensure that all pupils are successful within the program.  The types of event covered include but are not limited to; Alderman and School Committee meetings, sporting events, election coverage, holiday festivities, awards assemblies and graduations.

REQUIREMENTS

All students are required to serve as a crew member on at least 1 production per term, but all class members will be assigned an equal number of events which may be more than 1.   Students will be scheduled BY THE INSTRUCTOR.

Every effort will be made to work within the students’ work and social schedules.  Therefore, WORK WILL NOT be an accepted excuse for being a ‘no show’ on the day of production.  Students are expected to inform their employers of their scholastic obligations.

Schedule will be posted 2 weeks prior to events, leaving students ample time to adjust their schedule.

In certain circumstances, students may “swap” crew assignments with other students, only with the instructor’s approval.  Remote productions should be treated with the same respect with which an employee treats his/her work schedule.

Each student will receive an evaluation sheet on his/her performance for each production upon which grades for the remote will be based.

The remote production grade will be 100 points per event, which will be a significant portion of the overall grade.  IT IS LIKELY THAT A STUDENT WILL GET A FINAL COURSE GRADE OF C OR LOWER IF THEY DO NOT PARTICIPATE IN ANY REMOTE PRODUCTIONS.

Remote productions are considered school events and all rules of conduct and dress apply these functions.

Failure to show up for a remote production will result in a zero grade for that production. Additionally, a warning will be issued by the department and sent to the parent/guardian.

CONCLUSION

The remote production component of the “Television Production” is to be taken seriously by all students.  We do not feel that these requirements are unreasonable in light of the unique educational opportunity it presents.  Not only does it develop solid video production skills but also exposes students to the workings of local government, introduces them to interesting and diverse people, and gives them front row seats to special events.  The program also helps develop a sense of responsibility and social skills that any employer would expect in an effective employee.

If a student has any concern that he/she will not be able to meet these requirements, serious consideration should be given withdrawing from the course.
