Inventories
The Chicopee Public Schools Telecommunication’s Department services approximately 2511 workstations. We have a number of Category C computers that are targeted for upgrade and replacement. These replacements will allow us to upgrade to suitable multimedia workstations for all schools and all grade levels.

Software
At this time we have chosen Microsoft Office XP Professional (which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) as the standard for the Chicopee Public School District. There are also specialized software packages that integrate with specific subject areas in the curriculum.
Our main goal is to keep up to date the labs in every building to the capability of utilizing multimedia software and accomplishing telecommunications as we go forward into the information age. In addition our long range goals are to have a minimum of one computer in every classroom with multimedia and telecommunication capabilities to access the Internet from every classroom, computer lab and library in the city.
Hardware Public Schools
In the Chicopee City schools efforts are being made to purchase more up to date computers in the schools. Our most current effort is in the new Chicopee High School with 607 new computers. Another scheduled initiative we have begun to implement is wireless networking. We currently have 19 wireless lap top carts operational in the School District.
- Each school in the Chicopee Public Schools has at least one computer lab. In the two High Schools there are more than one lab consisting of a mixture of A, and B category computers. The older computers stations in the C category are in need of updating. We estimate the need to replace approximately 300 PC’s per year to keep our computers up to date in the district.
High Schools
- There are various locations at the high schools that have up-to-date computers such as the Graphics Arts Dept., and the Library Media Centers in both High Schools. CTE Department computer labs are found in both high schools. Three CTE labs are located at Chicopee Comp and three at Chicopee High School. The labs at the High Schools consist of a mix of Class A and B computers as listed on the spreadsheet in Link to DOE Tech plan reporting. The computers at the new Chicopee High are all Class A computers.
Elementary Schools
- Computer labs in the Elementary schools consist of a mix of Class A, B and C computers as listed on the spreadsheet in Link to DOE Tech Plan reporting.
- All Elementary school classroom computers consist of a mix of Class A, B and C computers as listed on the spreadsheet in Link to DOE Tech Plan reporting.
Middle Schools
- Two computer labs which consist of a mix of Class A, B and C computers are listed on the spreadsheet in Link to DOE Tech Plan reporting. The computer labs are networked to a building file server. Fairview Memorial Middle School also has one computer with a large 32” wall mounted television monitor/receiver in every classroom.
Again our goal is to up date the hardware in every building to the capability of utilizing multimedia software and accomplishing telecommunications. The additional purchase of computer stations will allow us to have computers in every classroom, lab, and library. This will give us the ability to access information using multimedia software and telecommunication capabilities to access the Internet.

Network/Telecommunication Capacities
Networking Initiative
The Chicopee Public Schools has accomplished the Network wiring of the entire Chicopee Public School system. Each school has been wired with 10 Base T-level 5 (category 5) or better cabling and the appropriate equipment (patch panels, switches, routers, and HP Fiber switches and servers) that allow us to be connected to the Telecommunications Dept. through the city wide CELD (Chicopee Electric Light) Fiber Optic WAN (Wide Area Network.). Located at the Telecommunications Department are Internet Servers that provide service to all school through the CELD WAN. Internet access is available in all city schools and drops are located in every classroom. We have two networks operational on the WAN. They are the Administrative network and the Instructional network. Internet is operational on both networks. All School offices are on the Administrative network accessing iPASS our web based Student Information System that enables us to be DOE compliant as far as reporting student data. Our Special Education Departmental staff also utilizes the Internet to access E-SPED our IEP web based reporting system. In the fall of 2006 we completed the newest department initiative of connecting the last of our School buildings to the fiber network. CELD (Chicopee Electric Light) has run fiber to all school department buildings. Currently the following buildings are live on the fiber network. Telecom Dept.,
MEC our Internet Service Provider is providing the city with Internet access on 6 T1 data lines for a monthly charge. We do apply for ERATE funding and are currently funded at the 71% reimbursement level. We are planning to add another T1 when the new Comprehensive High School is brought on line in September of 2007. We will again be utilizing ERATE funding to make this possible.
We also broadcast Annenberg CPB Channel interactive programming from our satellite downlink at the Telecommunication center to all public schools in the City of Chicopee. This programming is also broadcast city-wide reaching all city residence on Channel 63 of the Cable Television System.
Each school in the Chicopee Public School system also has cable TV. Connections
in the library and other locations within the building enable the broadcasting
of television programming such as Ch 5, our locally originated channel. This
channel broadcasts the city public bulletin board, other channels fed to our
school, Ch 57 WGBY, our local public broadcasting station (PBS), Annenberg,
educational television broadcasting. Also available are the three major
networks and various satellite television services.
