Outlook Web Access 2003
The New User Interface
Once the application opens, you will immediately notice the change in the user interface. If you are an Outlook user, this screen should look very familiar to you. The look and feel of the new Chicopee 2003 closely follows the traditional Outlook layout.

Figure 1: Chicopee User Interface
One entirely new feature in Chicopee 2003 is the Reading Pane, which is illustrated in Figure 1. This feature, which appears as a default with this interface, shows the selected e-mail message in an expanded preview window for convenience. You can move this Pane from the right side of the screen (as indicated above by the red arrow) to the bottom of the screen, or you can turn it off completely through the Reading Pane Toolbar Control Button.
The left sidebar of the interface gives you rapid access to your e-mail folders and to the other features of your Outlook personal information manager. You will find navigation among the various sections of web access and your control over managing your messages.
Reading and Handling E-mail Messages
Good message management begins with the proper use of folders. While working with folders was inconvenient in the previous interface, it is a snap with Web access 2003. New folders, along with new messages, appointments, contacts, distribution lists, and tasks, are created using the New button on the toolbar as illustrated in Figure 2a. Creating a new folder is as easy as choosing a name and clicking a button.

Figure 2a: ‘New’ button
Once you have created your individualized folders, you will find that the new Web access provides a frequently requested feature that was missing from the previous interface—the ability to move, copy, or delete multiple messages at once. You can use the multi-select Windows technique of depressing the Control Key while selecting several messages at once, and then clicking and dragging them into any folder. Similarly, multiple messages can be deleted at the same time. These features make managing your mailbox a snap.
As a reminder, all of the default and any individual folders, along with new, saved, and sent e-mails, are stored on the Chicopee mail server, not on your local computer. Since your mailbox has a size limit, deleting unneeded e-mails is a beneficial habit to form. Frequent emptying of the Deleted Items folder and deletion/organization of the messages in your Sent Items folder—especially those with large attachments—will greatly reduce mailbox size and avoid mailbox storage limit issues. If you normally use Outlook from your work PC on the Chicopee network, when you access e-mail from the Chicopee web client you will not be able to see the personal folders that you created at work. These folders are stored on your local computer, not on the mail server.
Sending an E-mail Message
The Chicopee e-mail message interface follows the traditional Outlook layout scheme and provides a host of familiar options such as the Address Book, Attachment, Help, and Search tools, and the ability to format your e-mails.
Adding attachments is likewise much faster with this new interface, and follows the familiar Windows pattern of browsing for the document, making the selection, and then confirming the attachment.
As a final note on sending messages, the New Message toolbar, which is indicated by a red arrow in Figure 3, allows you to perform tasks such as checking spelling and names; inserting attachments, setting message status, and requesting a receipt.
Address Book
Another feature included in Web access 2003 is the ability to view and search the
Address Book. The Web access 2003 interface can match partial names typed into the recipient boxes; you can also get names directly from the address book or perform a search for specific names.Don’t overlook the usefulness of the
Outlook Address Book. In addition to storing basic address information, the Address book contains fields to record a whole host of details about your contacts.Outlook Calendar
Due to the cleaner look and faster operation of Web access2003, users will find the Outlook Calendar to be both functional and user-friendly. The calendar is fully-featured and allows you to view your calendar in a variety of formats, which can be customized to meet your specific needs. The easy-to-use calendar facilitates the creation of recurring appointments as well as supports the function to schedule meetings.
