The Family Resource Center at Chicopee Academy

During the 2008-2009 school year, a Family Resource Center was established in the library of Chicopee Academy. The goal of the Family Resource Center is to provide access to information for students and families in our multi-cultural school community in order to strengthen family life, community life and personal growth and development.

Prior to the creation of the Family Resource Center, information from the students and families attending Chicopee Academy was gathered, via a questionnaire, to assess what information would be of most interest and relevance to the users of the Resource Center. The information gathered from the questionnaire was used to determine the layout of the center and the content of material available to the users of the center.

The Family Resource Center is located in a quiet corner of the library that is showcased by student artwork. The area contains a conference table and chairs for family and school/staff meetings. The Family Resource Center also contains a corner dedicated to our youngest family members with age appropriate artwork, toys and books.

The Family Resource Center is home to an abundance of reading materials and information which will help our families grow and succeed in many areas of life. Information and pamphlets are available covering topics such as: community resources, GED, obtaining employment, resume writing, college/financial aid planning, scholarships, mental health, domestic violence, substance abuse, raising healthy and happy children, managing your money, etc. Because we, at Chicopee Academy, recognize the value of our diversity, most of the reading materials and pamphlets are offered in both Spanish and English language versions.

Along with the materials available in the Family Resource Center, adjustment counselors, the school nurse, teachers and staff are always available to students and their family members to help in any way.
