10 Tips for a Successful
Writing Program
1. Introduce one process step at a time.
(Students need not master one step before being introduced to the next step.)
2. Provide adequate modeling at all steps of the process.
3. Give students adequate blocks of time to actually write.
4. Give students opportunities to write in all subjects.
5. Include journal writing as a component of your writing program.
6. Give students opportunities to choose their writing topic.
7. Include cooperative learning strategies in your writing program.
(This can free you for individual student conferencing.)
8. Give students a method to track their writing process.
9. Have students share in assessment. (Keep red ink to a minimum.)
10. Give students a variety of formats for publishing their text.
Happy Writing!
