Curriculum adjustment for Social Studies (Pre-K-12) has become necessary with the History and Social Science MCAS assessment that is currently in the final stages of implementation.  In fact, the scoring release time for the MCAS is as follows:

• May 2006 - test scores will not be reported and the History and Social Science MCAS will not be a requirement for graduation.
• May 2007 - test scores will be reported to students, schools, and to the media but the History and Social Science MCAS will not be a requirement for graduation.
• May 2008 - test scores will be reported to students, schools, and to the media but the History and Social Science MCAS will not be a requirement for graduation.
• May 2009 - test scores will be reported to students, schools, and to the media but the History and Social Science MCAS will not be a requirement for graduation.
• May 2010 - test scores will be reported to students, schools, and to the media and the History and Social Science MCAS may serve as a requirement for graduation.

In addition, the History and Social Science MCAS will be given in the following grades:

Grade 5

Basis: History, geography, economics, and civics standards, concepts and skills for grades 4 and 5.

Coverage: U.S. history and geography, early settlements through the War of 1812

Grade 7

Basis: History, geography, economics, and civics standards, concepts and skills for grades 6 and 7. 

Coverage: World geography and history of ancient and classical civilizations

Grade 11

Basis: Standards, concepts, and skills contained in U.S. History I and II

Coverage: U.S. History, Constitutional Period through 2001
