Academic Benchmarks / Skills:

  1. Write stories or scripts containing the basic elements of fiction (characters, dialogue, setting, and plot with a clear resolution).  (HM19.14)
  2. Write poems using poetic techniques (alliteration, onomatopoeia), figurative language (simile, metaphor), and graphic elements (capital letters and line length).  (HM19.15)
  3. Write brief research reports with clear focus and supporting detail.  (HM19.16)
  4. Write a short explanation of a process that includes a topic statement, supporting details, and a conclusion.  (HM19.17)
  5. Write formal letters to correspondents such as authors, newspapers, businesses, or government officials.  (HM19.18)
  6. Make distinctions among fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry, and use these genres selectively when writing for different purposes.  (HM20.4)

  11. Group related ideas together and place them in logical order when writing summaries or reports.  (HM23.7)

  1. Apply steps for obtaining information from a variety of sources, organizing information, documenting sources, and presenting research in individual and group projects.  (HM24.3)
  2. Use prescribed criteria from a scoring rubric to evaluate their own and others’ compositions, recitations, or performances before presenting them to an audience.  (HM25.3)
