Academic Benchmarks / Skills:

1.       Write stories that have a beginning, middle, and end, and contain details of setting. (HM 19.9)

2.     Write short poems that contain simple sense details. (HM 19.10)

3.     Write brief summaries of information gathered through research. (HM 19.11)

4.     Write a brief interpretation or explanation of a literary or informational text using evidence from the text as support. (HM 19.12)

5.     Write an account based on personal experience that has a clear focus and sufficient supporting detail. (HM 19.13)

6.     Use appropriate language for different audiences and purposes (other students, parents). (HM 20.3)

7.     Revise their writing to improve level of detail after determining what could be added or deleted.         (HM 21.2)

8.     Improve word choice by using dictionaries. (HM 21.3)

9.     Write legibly in cursive, leaving space between letters in a word, and between words in a sentence.      (HM 22.3)

10.  Use knowledge of correct mechanics (end marks, commas for series, capitalization), usage (subject and verb agreement in a simple sentence), and sentence structure (elimination of fragments) when writing and editing. (HM22.4)

11.   Use knowledge of letter sounds, word parts, word segmentation, and syllabication to monitor and correct spelling. (HM 22.5)

12.  Spell most commonly used homophones correctly in their writing (there, they’re, their; two, too, to).    (HM 22.6)

13.  Organize plot events in an order that leads to a climax in their stories. (HM 23.3)

14.  Organize ideas for a brief response to a reading. (HM 23.4)

15.  Organize ideas for an account of personal experience in a way that makes sense. (HM 23.5)

16.  Identify and apply steps in conducting and reporting research.  (HM 24.2)

17.  Form and explain their own standards or judgments of quality, display them in the classroom, and present them to family members. (HM25.2)

18.  Compare stories in print with their filmed adaptations, describing the similarities and differences in the portrayal of characters, plot, and setting.  (HM 26.2)
