English Language Arts Curriculum

Grades K-5

Rationale

The English Language Arts Curriculum Committee developed this curriculum document in order to assist teachers in planning, organizing, and teaching to the Massachusetts State Language Arts Frameworks.  This committee reviewed several curriculum documents from various school districts and created a format that we felt would be clear, concise, and usable.  Since fourth grade MCAS scores determine the rate of yearly progress, the committee decided to complete the grade four curricula first, and then the curriculum for earlier grades was established.

 

It is understood that the Language Arts Curriculum may need to be modified and adjusted by individual teachers to meet the needs of our diverse student population.  Benchmarks should be mastered at each developmental level.  Students should be continually assessed to determine if they are acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to attain mastery of the benchmarks.

 

It is our hope that this document will help teachers identify the standards, help students to reach the grade level benchmark expectations necessary for success, and assist teachers with standards based instruction.
